Squaring the Net in Washington Internet Daily

A new French citizens' lobbying group wants public debate on Internet-related regulation affecting human rights and freedoms, one of its organizers told us Friday. "Squaring the Net" (La quadrature du net) hopes to help spur a "societal movement which we feel is ready to develop," said Philippe Aigrain, director of the Society for Public Information Spaces.

Why this name "Squaring the net" ?

We believe that the promoters of the projects we are opposing are trying to solve a problem similar to squaring the circle. They did not understand that we changed era, that some approaches are outdated, that we must collectively rethink our approach to the control of information.

We believe that it is impossible to effectively control the flow of information in the digital age by the law and the technology without harming public freedoms, and damaging economic and social development. This is what we call squaring the net.

Who are we?

What is La Quadrature?

La Quadrature du Net is a non-profit association that defends the rights and freedom of citizens on the Internet. More specifically, it advocates for the adaptation of French and European legislation to the founding principles of the Internet, most notably the free circulation of knowledge. As such, La Quadrature du Net engages in public-policy debates concerning, for instance, freedom of expression, copyright, regulation of telecommunications and online privacy.

What do we want ?

We call for a one year moratorium on all projects aimed at establishing new rules about digital technologies and electronic communications, when individual freedoms or human rights are concerned.

We call for the creation of a parliamentary delegation to civil liberties and digital technologies, responsible at first of making an assessment of existing legal texts in this area, which includes making implementation reports when intended in the law, as well as necessary impact studies.
